Botanical Name: Alpinia zerumbet variegataNative Region/Environment: Southeast Asia Sun/Light: Full sun in cooler regions and part shade to part sun as the environment becomes warmer and more arid. Temperature: USDA Zones 8b-12, possibly lower with winter protection. Makes a good year round house plant. Water: Prefers consistent moisture but not soggy conditions. Soil: Fertile, loose Growth Pattern: A clumping ginger that grows from underground rhizomes which sprout subterranean aerial roots, working out laterally as opposed to deeper. Mature Size: Capable of growing 7'-10' tall under ideal conditions, but more likely to 6' as a die back perennial in cooler climates and closer to 4'-5' as a potted plant. As a clumping ginger, it will spread unless interfered with. Attributes: Stunning variegated foliage in greens and yellow imbue a lush, tropical feel.
