Botanical Name: Cheilocostus speciosus

Native Region/Environment: Native to Singapore.  It is Critically Endangered natively, but naturalized extensively throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii, China, India and Micronesia.

Sun/Light: Full morning sun to part shade or bright, diffuse light is best.

Temperature: USDA zones 8b to 12.  This is a rhizomatic plant so winter die back will occur in colder regions. Apply a top dressing of compost insulation and the plants should reemerge in spring. the warmest of climates it is an evergreen grower. 

Water: Consistent moisture but not soggy.

Soil: Organically rich porous soil composition 

Growth Pattern: Stalks grow in a spiraling manner clockwise producing abundant but spaced long, slender green leaves  on the exterior of the curved slender reddish-maroon canes that produce a crowning flower.  Overwinter rhizomes in a cool, dry place above 50 F or inground with a protective cover to prevent from freezing.. 

Mature Size: In warm, moist tropical and subtropical regions this clumping ginger will attain heights of 9 feet or more whereas similar conditions in temperate climates the plant will grow to less than half, around 4'.  The onset of flowering coincides with the beginning of the rainy season in its native habitat.

Attributes: Long lasting, colorful blooms prized for cut flower arrangements. There are numerous tonics, teas and preparations for a large number of medical treatments. Excellent container plant; a lush garden perimeter plant or a large indoor potted plant.
