Botanical Name: Duranta erecta

Native Region/Environment: Mexico, naturalized throughout Southern United States, Central and South America and the Caribbean-demonstrated it's prized status.

Sun/Light: Full sun.  Partial sun will diminish blooms and produce a lanky, sparce plant.

Temperature: Zone 8-12, may be planted as an annual in cooler climates and makes a good houseplant

Water: Ground plants require an inch of rain/watering per week; whereas indoor plants perform best when soil is allowed to mostly dry between watering.

Soil: Rich loan, sandy or gravelly.  Grows best in well drained soil.

Growth Pattern: Perennial in warmer regions and is a profuse flower producer in warm weather.  Fast grower that responds very well to pruning or shaping; it can make an attractive hedge.   Performs best with regular pruning. to maintain a full shape.

Mature Size: 4'-5' in cooler climates and up to 20' if left unpruned in warm climates.  Can be pruned to be a small tree.  May grow thorns in maturity.

Attributes:  An ever bloomer in warm regions with the abundant white fringed purple-violet flowers growing in clusters that gently perfume the air with a soft sweet vanilla aroma. 

Attractor: Butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.

Duranta erecta, also known as Golden Dewdrop named after the abundant golden berries, is a showy specimen plant perfect for a prominent location, patio pot or indoor house plant. .  Prized for its ceaseless warm weather blooming clusters of white fringed bluish-lavender blossoms each only a half inch in diameter yet providing powerful wafts of candy sweet vanilla fragrance.  The orange berries are highly toxic to children and small pets, but harmless to birds.

All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested by people or pets, but has no effect upon birds.
